Meet Dr. Sasha Davidson

Greetings! I’m Dr. Sasha Davidson and welcome to my first blog! With my first post, I want to share more about me and my story.  I invite you to check here frequently to learn more about issues related to all things pregnancy, high-risk pregnancies and otherwise.  I hope that my blog will be a resource for all those women seeking to understand some of the pregnancy diagnoses or questions that come up along the course of your pregnancy.

I am reminded of my journey in medicine as I recently visited Washington, DC where my medical career began.  It was twenty years ago that I left  South Florida to pursue my dream of becoming a physician.  I am a native of South Florida who grew up in North Miami Beach and Pembroke Pines.  It is a thrill for me to be able to serve my community as a perinatologist and high-risk pregnancy specialist in Fort Lauderdale. I have the knowledge and tools to assist my fellow hometown moms during such an exciting and life-changing moment in their lives.

I have always loved kids and was initially set on becoming a Pediatrician. It was during medical school at Georgetown University that I set my sights on Obstetrics and Gynecology.  I remember the defining moment that led me to embark on this journey of pursuing OBGYN.  One night while on call with the residents, I participated in several interesting cases that really opened my eyes to the specialty.  We operated on a young woman with an ovarian mass that twisted around itself, then proceeded to the postpartum floor to care for a breastfeeding mom who developed a breast infection then returned to the labor and delivery unit to help with the delivery of a baby.  I instantly knew this was my calling as I realized I enjoyed the variety and the ability to provide surgical care to patients.  It was then that my career path changed. I went on to complete my OBGYN residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and spent several years as a practicing OBGYN in Washington, DC.

After practicing for several years, my desire to gain more knowledge and expertise combined with my passion to help high-risk pregnant women led me to my decision to pursue subspecialty training as a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Specialist aka Perinatologist. I completed my MFM fellowship training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Montefiore Medical Center in New York. My training allows me to now provide women with even greater expertise in identifying and managing complicated diagnoses during pregnancy, developing an evidence-based plan of care for those women with chronic medical conditions that can impact their health and the development of their baby.

As someone who comes from humble beginnings, I never thought it would be possible to start my own practice. However, through a lot of hard work, dedication and the support of my close-knit community, I recently opened Signature Perinatal Center. As a Fort Lauderdale Perinatologist/MFM Specialist, I offer my patients a full spectrum of specialized maternal and fetal care.

Being a high-risk pregnancy specialist, I encounter challenging situations with my patients and often need to have difficult conversations.  However, my patients have come to know me as a compassionate academic who will provide them with a thoughtful plan of care based on the most up-to-date medical information. This helps guide them in their decision making and in managing their high-risk pregnancy.  My approach also involves teamwork and collaboration with my patient’s OBGYN to develop a personalized pregnancy plan to improve their chances of a healthy and successful pregnancy.  I treat each patient as though she is my sister because my patients do in fact become like family to me. The pregnancy journey can be emotional, frightening, and confusing but it can also be a wonderful, happy and healthy experience — and that’s what I strive for with each of my patients.

When I’m not helping moms with their pregnancies, I am a true believer in giving back to my community. I love to get involved and give support where it’s needed.  I provide free Gynecology care to uninsured women in Fort Lauderdale at the Light of the World Clinic. I also serve as a physician liaison for the March of Dimes Healthy Baby Worth the Wait Committee in Fort Lauderdale and I am a member of the  Florida Maternal Child Health Committee.  In my free time, I love to travel, attend live music events and spend time with my amazing family and friends.

Now that you know a little more about me, I hope you’ll continue to follow along with me as I share my knowledge, insights and helpful pregnancy tips.
