Fetal Echocardiogram Testing Specialist
We perform abdominal and endovaginal ultrasounds to evaluate a baby’s heart. Women with fetal congenital heart disease risk factors benefit from a specialist like Dr. Davidson performing fetal cardiac evaluation through fetal echocardiogram testing.
Fetal Echocardiogram Test
What to expect:
Fetal echocardiograms are most often completed through an abdominal ultrasound after 18 weeks and takes about 1-2 hours depending on the complexity of the baby’s heart. In early pregnancy (as early as 12 weeks), a fetal echocardiogram is completed endovaginally.
If a heart defect is found, we will refer you to a pediatric cardiologist for a more detailed diagnosis and counseling. If the study is normal, we will discuss whether your unique situation warrants multiple studies.
A heart defect diagnosis significantly increases the risk of genetic problems such as Down Syndrome or DiGeorge Syndrome. If a benign tumor is found in the heart, a diagnosis of Tuberous Sclerosis (a genetic syndrome that has significant implications for abnormal brain development) is much more likely. Knowing about these risks can help you make well-informed decisions about your pregnancy.
